Drainage Cells and Water Storage Layers
Understand how drainage cells create space within landscape assemblies and which product details to confirm.
The Short Answer
Drainage cells are shaped plastic components used to create void space within a construction layer. The balance between drainage and water retention depends on the particular product geometry and the designed assembly.
What the Cell Structure Does
A drainage or storage layer sits between other functional materials. Its profile may allow water to move across a roof or landscape deck while maintaining separation between the growing medium and the supporting structure. Some products incorporate reservoirs, while others are primarily intended to keep a flow path open.
Do not assume that every cell panel stores the same volume of water. Product depth, openings, orientation and connections all affect how the layer behaves. Compare the declared specification for the selected model, including loading and drainage test conditions.
Where the Layer Fits
In a planted assembly, a filter geotextile may be used above the drainage layer to reduce soil migration. Protection and waterproofing layers below serve different purposes. Their order and compatibility should follow the project design and the manufacturers’ installation guidance.
A landscape deck also needs a route to drain outlets. Water-storage capacity does not remove the need to assess overflow and discharge. Access for outlet inspection and maintenance should remain part of the finished layout.
What to Confirm Before Ordering
Function and orientation
Confirm whether the chosen model is intended for drainage, storage or both, and how it should be installed.
Load and compression
Review the load case and the product test data under the relevant conditions.
Layer compatibility
Match the filter fabric and protective layers to the soil, cell geometry and waterproofing system.
Panel coverage and connections
Check the dimensions, joints, cutting details and quantity allowance for the actual site layout.
Common Questions
Can a drainage cell replace waterproofing?
No. A drainage or storage component does not replace the specified waterproofing system.
Are all cells suitable for trafficked decks?
No. Suitability depends on the complete assembly, applied loads and product performance data.
