HDPE Geomembrane: Key Selection Factors
Review thickness, material properties, joining and protection when discussing an HDPE geomembrane specification.
The Short Answer
An HDPE geomembrane is a continuous polymer sheet used as a barrier layer. Selecting a suitable product requires more than choosing a nominal thickness, the material properties, joints, substrate and exposure conditions also matter.
Start with the Barrier Requirement
Geomembranes have a different purpose from drainage boards. The membrane is intended to restrict fluid movement through a barrier, while a drainage layer provides a route for water to move. Some projects need both, together with protection or separation materials.
State the intended application and the required specification before comparing products. Ask for the grade, nominal thickness, permitted tolerances, surface finish and relevant test documentation. A photograph or generic product name is not sufficient to establish project suitability.
Consider the Whole Installation
The substrate should be prepared to the specified condition, and the membrane should be protected from features that could damage it. Geotextile protection may be part of the design, depending on the adjacent materials and loading.
Panel arrangement, joints, penetrations and terminations require attention. Joining and testing procedures should be defined by the project specification and carried out by suitably qualified personnel. Request the relevant installation documentation alongside the material offer.
A Practical Specification Checklist
Material and thickness
Specify the resin or material requirements, sheet thickness and acceptable tolerance.
Performance documentation
Request the test methods and results relevant to the intended exposure and barrier function.
Joints and details
Identify seams, pipe penetrations, edges and transitions to other materials.
Handling and protection
Plan storage, installation access and protection of the membrane before it is covered.
Common Questions
Is a thicker membrane always the right choice?
No. Thickness is one part of the specification. The complete performance requirements and installation details must also be considered.
Does a drainage board provide the same function?
No. A profiled drainage board and a continuous barrier membrane serve different roles.
