Materials for drainage, waterproofing and civil engineering
Planning Drainage for Underground Works
Connect drainage layers, filtration and collection routes when planning a below-ground material enquiry.
The Short Answer
Underground drainage should be considered as a connected route from water entry to collection and discharge. A drainage material is only one part of that route.
Separate the Functions
Below-ground works may require a drainage board, filter geotextile, protective layer and collection drain. The drainage layer creates a passage for water. The filter layer helps control soil migration, while protection reduces the risk of damage to adjacent materials.
Our range includes drainage boards and geotextiles for coordinated drainage, filtration and separation layers. Describe the intended location and system arrangement when requesting a recommendation. Products with different structures should not be treated as interchangeable just because their names include “drain”.
Follow the Water Route
Review how surface water and groundwater may reach the structure, then identify where the drainage layer connects to the collection system. Changes of level, corners and interruptions can affect continuity. Outlet arrangements need to be confirmed by the project designer.
For transport and underground infrastructure, the surrounding ground and applied loads can differ significantly from a roof or garden application. Match the material data and installation details to those conditions, and confirm access for construction and later maintenance.
Information to Share with a Supplier
Location and ground conditions
Describe the structure, soil and expected sources of water.
Drainage layout
Provide a drawing showing the drainage layer, collection route and outlet.
Loads and surrounding materials
Identify backfill, protective materials and the relevant loading requirements.
Product specification
Include dimensions, flow or filtration requirements and the required test methods.
Common Questions
Can the drain layout be selected from a photograph?
No. A photograph can help explain the setting, but the layout needs project information and a confirmed outlet arrangement.
Is filter fabric always the same?
No. Filtration requirements depend on the soil and drainage system, so the fabric specification should be checked.
